Like the Icarus of myth, the boy flew too high and eventually fell to his death. One day, believing his father to be imprisoned by Deviants, Icarus attempted to use a mechanical flying device to find his father. Centuries before he would fight alongside modern heroes like the Avengers, Ikaris had a son named Icarus. In 1986's Eternals #5, we learn that in the Marvel Universe, it's the Eternal Ikaris who's the inspiration for this story. Upon their escape, Daedalus warns his son not to fly too close to the sun, but Icarus ignores him, and when the wax of Icarus' flying contraption melts, he plummets to his death into the sea. When King Minos imprisons Daedalus and his family so that the secret of the labyrinth can never be revealed, Daedalus constructs flying machines out of bird feathers and wax. It's Daedalus who designs the labyrinth meant to act as prison to the man-bull monster, the Minotaur. Druig, Makkaris and Thena will travel aboard the spaceship of the Eternals to. She knew all along the what Arishem’s plan was. Ikaris leaves the planet and launches into the Sun, probably committing suicide. Ikaris Ajak was the only Eternal who could talk to Arishem. In addition to that, she also apparently taught the wizard Merlin, witnessed the burning of Rome, and took part in the French Revolution.In Greco-Roman myth, Icarus is the son of Daedalus, a genius forced to serve King Minos. Answer (1 of 7): That’s because Ajak was injured and broken hearted by the betrayal of Ikaris. In fact, she can alter matter on the atomic level, much like Atom Eve from Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. This alone makes Sersi one of the most, if not the most, powerful Eternal on Earth. And if you are familiar with the story, she can transform people into animals. Or, to be more precise, she is Cirse from the Greek myths. Perhaps the reason comic book readers even know about her or the Eternals at all is because of her time on the Avengers.Īs you might have guessed from her name, she’s also the actual inspiration for the sorceress Circe from Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. In fact, she’s so involved that she’s had quite a few relationships of the centuries, the most recent being an ongoing on-again, off-again romance with another Marvel superhero and fellow Avenger, Dane Whitman, aka The Black Knight (Kit Harrington). Of all the Eternals, Sersi (Gemma Chan) has consorted with humanity the most. He’s also what’s known as a “Prime Eternal,” making him one the Eternals’ de facto leaders which, in turn, also makes him a key component for causing the transformation into a Uni-Mind. Ikaris, unable to face his family, flies directly into the sun. Like Sprites myth about Ikaris flying too close to the sun, he does just that.
Driven mad by his guilt, Ikaris apologizes to Sersi for what hes done. Rather than his team turning against him, Ikaris turns on himself.
It is fitting, thus, that like Icarus, Ikaris is known to be an excellent flier. Ikaris does die in Eternals, but not in the way youd expect. He’s also one the closest things Marvel Comics has to Superman in terms of his powers, including heat vision. The Eternals’ Ikaris Is Based on Icarus from Greek Mythology. That’s because Ikaris has mastered the ability to manipulate his own gravitational field, allowing him to soar in the air at supersonic speeds. In fact, he’s so good he can make others fly so long as they are near him. Only his case, he’s the best flyer of the bunch. Oh, and he’s also the person who really built Noah’s Ark during the Great Flood, too. Him changing his name into a variation of his son’s was his way of honoring and remembering him. And yes, he’s the same Daedalus from Greek mythology who invented flight and whose son, Icarus, died from flying too close to the Sun (in truth, he flew too high into the atmosphere and lost oxygen). Played by Richard Madden in the upcoming film, Ikaris’ actual name is Daedalus. The Eternals is now in theaters and the MCUs Phase 4 is more densely populated than ever before.
